Wheelabrator is delighted that Flintshire County Council’s Planning and Development Control Committee has voted to award planning consent to the Parc Adfer Energy Recovery Facility on the Deeside Industrial Park. We appreciate the time taken by both councillors and officers to ensure a robust final decision has been made.
Gary Aguinaga, Managing Director of UK Operations for Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded planning permission for the Parc Adfer Energy Recovery Facility. This decision will now start to unlock the supply chain, economic and environmental benefits for local communities and businesses in Deeside and beyond. In addition, we will continue our discussions with local businesses to identify who could use the heat or steam generated by the facility." He continued: "For the counties of Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire, this facility will be a long-term environmentally and economically sustainable solution for treating non-recyclable waste that would have otherwise been sent to landfill.” He concluded: “Over the last twelve months the Wheelabrator team has been working hard to build trust and improve people’s understanding of the project. We’re very grateful for the level of support and encouragement we’ve received, and we look forward to playing an active role in the community, the local business networks and to being a responsible employer for many years to come.”
The next stage of the development process will start immediately with the organisation of a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event in the summer. This will be an opportunity for businesses to find out more about the multi-million pound supply chain opportunities which will be available over the three year construction phase and the 25 years of operation. Construction work will start as soon as all the required planning and permitting permissions are in place. The facility will create around 300 jobs during the construction phase and some 35 new full time jobs when operational. In addition, the 16MW facility will be able to generate power equivalent to the needs of 30,000 homes and will create steam, which could provide further power to nearby commercial, industrial or residential users in the Deeside area.
